The Cederberg Wilderness Area

Come and follow in the footsteps of the earliest known people of South Africa - the San and the Khoi Khoi, often referred to collectively as the Khoisan. These groups have lived in this region for tens of thousands of years and represent some of the most ancient branches of the human family alive today. Genetic studies show that the ancestors of the San and Khoi Khoi split from other human populations very early in our species’ history, carrying some of the deepest genetic lineages of Homo Sapiens still found in people today. We begin our journey at !Khwa Ttu San Heritage Centre and Nature Reserve, located on the West Coast of the Cape of Good Hope. Here you’ll learn about San culture and history from San guides themselves, explore exhibitions that share their perspectives, and discover how this heritage connects with the broader story of humanity’s earliest inhabitants. The centre combines culture, nature and community-led interpretation to bring the San legacy to life. From there, we head inland to the Cederberg Wilderness Area, a dramatic mountain landscape known for its deep gorges, unique sandstone formations and some of the oldest rock art sites in the world. The rock paintings here were created over thousands of years by the San and Khoi Khoi, depicting animals, human figures and symbolic imagery that offer a fascinating window into ancient belief systems and way of life. Along the way, we’ll stop for a traditional fresh seafood experience at Die Strandloper on the beach at Langebaan, a celebration of Khoisan culture and hospitality. The name “Strandloper” refers to a coastal foraging group of people associated with the Khoisan people, called the Strandlopers or "beach foragers". We will also stop at the breathtaking Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve, where rolling white dunes create an exciting opportunity for adventure, from quad biking and sandboarding to wandering quietly through the ever-shifting sands of the Atlantis Dunes. After arriving in the Cederberg, we’ll spend time hiking to various ancient rock art sites tucked away in caves and overhangs - including iconic shelters where you can see remarkable ochre paintings - and deepen our understanding of the spiritual and artistic traditions of the region’s earliest people. Optionally, on a clear evening we could visit the Cederberg Astronomical Observatory, one of South Africa’s premier star-gazing locations. Far from urban light pollution, it offers guided telescope viewings and insights into the night sky, connecting the story of human origins to the broader universe. Expect nights under endless stars, days on off-road tracks, and a mix of camping and glamping as we journey deep into the wild heart of the Cederberg Wilderness Area.
